OXFAM’S Walk for Water raised $2500 through donations and sponsorship yesterday.
More than 30 people joined Oxfam Australia’s Warrnambool group to raise money for Cambodian families which are exposed to unsafe water and preventable disease and have no sanitation facilities. Participants enjoyed a leisurely stroll along the Warrnambool-Port Fairy rail trail.
President of the Warrnambool group Julie White was impressed by the funds raised.
“We had a lovely afternoon,” she said.
“It’s a nice sum to send away to Cambodia. People were very generous.”
The money will be used to provide sanitation facilities and also to educate the people in the villages on the best use of the equipment.
“It could be used for drilling bores or sinking wells,” Mrs White said.
“Basically it’s to provide a source of fresh water for villages. The people that Oxfam have on the ground teach the people how to best use the facilities too.” The Warrnambool walk began in the 1960s when a walker hiked to Allansford. The walks are held annually to raise money for water projects around the world.
