VLADIVOSTOK, September 04. /ITAR-TASS/. One man has been reported missing as a Cambodian-registered vessel with Russian-Ukrainian crew overturned and sank in the Sea of Japan (East Sea) on Thursday, an officer on duty at Russia’s state rescue centre said.
The search operation is being conducted by the Russian ship Aldan, a Japanese patrol boat and South Korea’s Golden Shake vessel.
The general cargo vessel Poline sailing under the flag of Cambodia loaded with timber was en route from Russia’s port of Plastun in the Primorsky Territory to China, when she overturned in conditions of a heavy storm. According to preliminary information, nine members of the ten-member crew - nine Russians and one Ukrainian national - had escaped to rescue rafts before the vessel overturned. Later, the sailors were saved by other vessels that reached the site of the accident.
The Poline measuring 83 metres in length was built in Finland in 1981. Its carrying capacity is 3,085 tonnes.
