Cambodia hosts int'l information technology, telecom expo

PHNOM PENH, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- An international information technology, electronics and telecom exhibition kicked off here on Friday with an aim of developing the country's Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry, officials said.

The three-day event, held at the Diamond Island Exhibition Centre, brought together 49 local and regional ICT companies with 271 booths, according to a press statement released at the opening ceremony.
"It is the biggest international event in Cambodia to showcase the customers with the latest products, technology and ideas across all areas of this industry," the statement said.
The expo was mainly sponsored by two Chinese state-owned companies, Huawei Technologies and China Comservice.
Huawei is a leading global ICT solutions provider as China Comservice is the largest telecommunications infrastructure service provider in China.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the expo, Cambodian minister of posts and telecommunications Prak Sokhonn expressed his sincere appreciation to Huawei and China Comservice for sponsoring the landmark event.
"Telecommunications and ICT have played a catalytic role in the rapid development of internet mobile and mobile communications," he said.
"The event is also a forum for leaders in the Cambodian ICT industry to share their vision and directions for the sector and foresee how the country can benefit from ICT in boosting its economic and social development."

Cary Yang, chief executive officer of Huawei Technologies- Cambodia, said the expo was an important platform for knowledge sharing by experts in the ICT sector.
"We are proud to support this event and make innovations in ICT accessible to the public," he said, adding that Huawei is displaying a variety of the latest Smartphone models at the event.
Huawei has operated in Cambodia for 15 years and has actively supported the development of ICT industry in this Southeast Asian nation.
"We have become a strategic partner of Cambodia in terms of making communications readily accessible to the public and developing future information society," he said.
Sok Puthyvuth, chairman of the Cambodia ICT Federation, which co-hosted the event with the ministry of posts and telecommunications, said the expo would boost ICT industry in Cambodia.
"Now, technology has been playing a significant role in people' s daily life and economic and social development," he said.
Cambodia has seen rapid growth in telecom and ICT industry in the last five years. The country has the population of 14.8 million, but the number of mobile phone subscribers in the country has reached 20.2 million last year, up six percent from 19.1 million in a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.
Besides, the ministry recorded about three million internet users by last year.
