A Cambodian man was killed and two others injured in a clash between police and protesters at the Poipet border checkpoint opposite Aranyaprathet district of Sa Kaeo province on Monday.

About 500 angry Cambodians gathered on the other side of the border this afternoon to protest customs and immigration officials allowing trucks carrying products from Thailand to enter and deliver goods to a warehouse in Poipet. 

The protesters blocked the road with pushcarts and set fire to them, causing Thai truck drivers to back off. Some who had driven past the protesters sped off to the warehouse and did not emerge, fearing they would be assaulted, Thai Rath Online reported. 

A team of 20 armed military police and 20 policemen fired warning shots to disperse the crowd, but protestors resisted and fights ensued for about 30 minutes.

Gunfire was heard and rocks and bottles were hurled during the fracas, that left three male protesters injured, one of them seriously.

The badly-injured demonstrator was identified as Jaruan Mao, 30, a worker at the Rong Klua market along the Thai-Cambodian border. He later was pronounced dead at Poipet hospital. The others have not been identified. 

The protesters reportedly dispersed after learning that Jaruan died. Cambodian security forces remained in the area to maintain peace and order. Thai truck drivers parked their vehicles on the Thai side and are assessing the situation.
