Cambodian Students: Know Your Roots

updated: May 23, 2015,
By Robert Bernstein

The UCSB Cambodian Students organization put on a performance Friday night "Know Your Roots". It included a short play about young Cambodian-Americans realizing they know little of the world their parents and grandparents came from. They want to know their roots and know the language of their ancestors.
They also talked about the Cambodian foods they enjoy and during the break they served a delicious meal of papaya salad, chicken wings and... donuts! The donut business has become a niche for Cambodian settlers in the US!
They also included a traditional "umbrella dance" as well as modern break dancing for contrast.
Here are my photos and don't miss the video clips at the end!
The second half of the evening included a short video of the history of Cambodia in the 1960s and 1970s.
It showed the modernization in the 1960s which ended with the Nixon/Kissinger bombing of this peaceful land. Followed by the rise of the Khmer Rouge in 1975. The country was saved from its misery when the Vietnamese intervened in 1979 to end that nightmare.
