Imports from Cambodia nearly double in Q1

Cambodian exports to Thailand nearly doubled during the first quarter of the year, the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh said Monday.

The Phnom Penh Post reported that total exports jumped 96% year-on-year through March to US$261 million thanks to improving economic ties between the two countries.

Jiranan Wongmongkol, director of the Thai Embassy's Foreign Trade Promotion Office, told the Post that Bangkok's move to boost cross-border trade created "favourable trade conditions for its neighbours," especially with Thai traders buying Cambodian products at the same market prices as from Thais.

Cambodia's exports to Thailand mainly consists of agricultural products, used garments, recyclable metal and fish. Its top Thai imports vehicles, petroleum, construction materials, fruit and vegetables.

Cross-border trade is expected to increase Cambodia's National Road 5 is connected to Trat province.

Trade volume between Cambodia and Thailand was $5.1 billion in 2014, up 11% from 2013, according to the embassy.
